In 1978 I built my first sand mould and cast it in an 8th grade foundry class. The rudimentary process of casting, almost organic. is a combination of earth, wind, fire and water. Together they create sand moulds made from crushed olivine sand, mixed with bentonite clay and water. Aluminum is heated in a clay graphite crucible placed in a brick kiln. The heat souce is a simple venturi burner using propane reaching temperatures up to 1700 degrees. Though the materials may be much more available in the modern world, the procees of pouring molten metal into a sand mould hasn't changed since first discovered over 5000 years age. Coral City Foundry has embraced the centuries old process, utilizing a unique process create one of a kind items. And with each casting and reveal the joy and exsuburation of still remains.
