Who Is Terry Dressel
The Story of Coral City Foundry
was in an 8th grade foundry class. The rudimentary process of sand casting, almost organic, is a combination of earth, wind, fire, and water. Each element contributes to the transforming process.
The sand molds are made from a combination of crushed olivine sand, bentonite clay, and water. Known as green sand, it is packed around a pattern. The pattern is removed, leaving a perfect void in the sand. Aluminum is heated in a clay graphite crucible placed in a brick kiln. The heat souce, a simple venturi burner, mixed propane with ambient air fires the kiln to
temperatures over 1700 degrees. The molten metal is poured into mold voids. When the metal cools, a reproduction of the pattern remains.
The materials may be much more available in the modern world, however the procees of pouring molten metal into a sand mold haven't changed since first discovered over 5000 years age.
Coral City Foundry has embraced the centuries old process, utilizing a unique process to create
one of a kind items. With each casting and reveal from the sand, the joy and exsuburation still remain. I can't help but think the early artisans must have felt the same way. It is my joy, and with that welcome to Coral City Foundry
